Antibiotic Prescription For Periodontal Therapy::
A SURVEY OF CURRENT TRENDS IN JAMMU REGION
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Systemic antibiotics in conjunction with scaling and root planning (SRP) can offer an additional benefit over SRP alone in treating periodontitis regarding clinical attachment loss (CAL) and pocket depth change. Dental practitioners, however, have a varied pattern regarding antibiotic Prescription among periodontal patients.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was, therefore, conducted to evaluate current trends in antibiotic therapy concerning periodontal disease among dental practitioners in the Jammu region.
METHODOLOGY: A questionnaire of 17 questions was disseminated to 300 dental practitioners in Jammu through web and mobile-based social networks. The collected data were tabulated, and statistical analysis was done.
RESULTS: Of 300 dental practitioners included in the study, 185 responded (45- no response and 70- half filled, thus excluded). Results show the following trends:
- Combination therapy preferred over monotherapy and local drug delivery(LDD)
- Periodontists lead the use of LDD among dental practitioners.
- Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern.
Lack of knowledge about the newer formulations and drug delivery systems.
CONCLUSION: Antibiotic therapy's role in managing periodontal patients cannot be denied. Still, there is a definite need to improve the awareness of dental practitioners, particularly in the aspects of newer delivery systems and formulations.
