Abstract

Objective: Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by a decrease in ovarian capacity before the onset of menopause and its subsequent loss. This study was designed to investigate serum coenzyme Q10 and Cytochrome C Oxidase levels in POI patients.

Material and Methods: 56 patients with premature ovarian failure were determined as Group 1, and the control group consisting of 48 healthy women was determined as Group 2. Serum coenzyme Q10 and cytochrome C oxidase levels were measured by ELISA.

Results: The mean serum coenzyme Q 10 concentrations were1.77±1.35 ng/mLin group 1 and 3.72±2.68 ng/mLin group 2. Serum Cytochrome C Oxidase levels were meaningful higher in group 2 (6.6±3.05 ng/mL) compared to groups 1 (2.67±2 ng/mL) (p < 0.01).

Conclusions: Mitochondrial dysfunction is a mechanism that plays a role in the etiopathogenesis of POI cases. CoQ10 supplements may play an effective role in the treatment of POI, but more randomized controlled trials of CoQ10 should be designed and performed.
