Study of transfusion related adverse events at skims over a period of one year.
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion proves to be a life saving process however it also carries many risks. Although these risks have been reduced to some extent yet they are inevitable. Hemovigilance deals with monitoring of adverse transfusion reactions.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
- Thedetermine the frequency& type of transfusion reactionsin patients receiving blood/ blood components.
- To study the risks associated with transfusion & to lower them.
PARTICIPANTS:24Patients admitted in skims whodevelopedATR.
STUDY DESIGN: prospective observational study.
MATERIALS & METHODS:All adverse transfusion reactions occurring over a period from June 2019 to May 2020 were studied in detail in accordance with guidelines laid down by Directorate General of Health Sciences & departmental standard operating procedures.
RESULTS:The frequency of ATR,s in our study was 0.08%.24 ATR,s were reported to our blood bank. Allergic transfusion reactions was the most commonfollowed by FNHTR & non-specific reactions.
CONCLUSION:Transfusion related adverse events areinevitable risks associated with transfusion of blood or its components. Awareness about safeblood transfusion practices must be given to concerned health care personnel which will help in improving hemovigilance system&decrease the incidence of transfusion reactions.
IMPLICATIONS:Fresh blood transfusion, saline washed blood&leuko-reduced blood are effective in prevention of allergic & FNHTR. This study shows the importance of rational use of blood& itscomponents, monitoring of bedside transfusion & documentation of ATR,sthereby helping in identification & timely management of ATR,s.
